Yo Gotti’s real name is Mario Sentell Giden Mims. He was born on 19 May 1981, in Memphis, Tennessee. His father was a gym instructor from Zimbabwe and his mother was an immigrant from South Africa. Yo Gotti grew up in an area that had a high crime rate. When he was in second grade his house was raided by policemen and some of his family members were sentenced to 15 years in jail. At a very young age, he started smoking, drinking, and stealing. At the age of 15, he started rapping and singing.
He attended Southwest Tennessee Community College and Union Avenue Campus.
At the beginning of his career, he named himself Lil Yo and he was affiliated with DJ Sound and his crew. From 2000 to 2006 he released 4 albums From, Life, Self-Explanatory, Back 2 da Basics.

In 2017, he released his 9th studio album, I Still Am, The lead single Rack it Up, featuring Nicki Minaj, peaked at 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song Rack It Up became the highest-grossing song of Yo Gotti’s career.
In 2020, he released his 10th studio album Untrapped, which peaked at 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.
