He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics from Princeton University in 1975 and a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1979.

Career

Powell’s career began in law, as he worked as a lawyer and investment banker in New York City. In 1979, he became a clerk to Judge Ellsworth Van Graafeiland of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. From 1983 to 1984, he worked at the firm of Werbel & McMillen. From 1984 to 1990, Powell worked as an investment banker at Dillon, Read & Co. In 1992, he became the Under Secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance. From 1993 to 1995, he worked as a managing director for Bankers Trust. From 2010 to 2012, Powell was a visiting scholar at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

In 2008, Powell became a managing partner of a private equity and venture capital firm, Global Environment Fund. 

He co-founded the investment banking firm Severn Capital Partners and served as a partner at The Carlyle Group, a global investment firm. In 2012, President Barack Obama appointed Powell to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. He became Chair of the Federal Reserve on February 5, 2018, following his nomination by President Donald Trump and subsequent confirmation by the U.S. Senate. As Chair, Powell plays a pivotal role in shaping and implementing monetary policy, overseeing financial regulation, and guiding the U.S. economy.
