Richard Stockton Rush III was born on March 31, 1962, in San Francisco, California, U.S., and developed a passion for the ocean and exploration from a young age. He was born to Richard Stockton Rush Jr. and Ellen Rush. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy. He completed his Bachelor in Science in aerospace engineering from Princeton University. In 1989, he completed a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley. 

Growing up near the coast, he was fascinated by the mysteries of the underwater world and dreamt of finding ways to explore its depths. At the age of 12, he learned scuba diving. At the age of 18, he became a commercial pilot. This early fascination would shape his future endeavors and career path.

Career

After completing his graduation, he worked for McDonnell Douglas as a flight test engineer for the F-15 program. Later after completing his Master’s, he worked for a venture capitalists firm Peregrine Partners. Then worked for companies like BlueView Technologies, and Museum of Flight

Rush’s career in deep-sea exploration began when he co-founded OceanGate Inc. in 2009, with Guillermo Söhnlein, a company dedicated to advancing submersible technology and enabling research in the marine domain. As the CEO of OceanGate, Rush played a pivotal role in the development of innovative submersibles capable of reaching extreme depths and conducting scientific missions.

Under Rush’s leadership, OceanGate introduced the Titan submersible, a state-of-the-art vehicle designed to explore depths of up to 4,000 meters. This groundbreaking technology has opened new frontiers for underwater exploration and enabled scientists, researchers, and explorers to access and study previously inaccessible parts of the ocean.

In 1986, Rush married Wendy Weil. The couple has two children.

Rush was on board the Titan, a submersible owned and designed by OceanGate, to view the Titanic wreckage, when the vessel lost contact with the surface ship MV Polar Prince on June 18, 2023. He died on June 18, 2023.
