He was born on September 17, 1930. John Adams Morgan was born into a family with a storied history. He was born to Catherine Frances Lovering Adams and Henry Sturgis Morgan. In 1949, attended Groton School in Massachusetts. In 1953, he completed a bachelor’s in arts from Yale University.

Since 1969, he served as the director of Upham & Co., Inc. From 1989 to 1998, he was the director of TriMas Corporation. Also also served as director of Furnishings International Inc., and Morgan Library & Museum.

At the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Morgan won a gold medal in the 6-metre class. He co-founded Morgan Joseph LLC in 2002.
