James May was born on January 16, 1963, in Bristol, England. He was the second child of parents who worked as nurses. As a child, May was interested in cars and engineering and spent much of his time tinkering with various projects. He attended Oakwood Comprehensive School and Pendle College, University of Lancaster, where he studied music and earned a degree in music technology. 


After completing his graduation, he started working at a hospital in Chelsea as a records officer. He also worked as a molder at the foundry. 

May began his career as a writer, working for several publications including The Engineer, Autocar Magazine, Car Magazine, and The Daily Telegraph.

In 1999, he was hired as a presenter on Top Gear, where he quickly became known for his dry humor and wry commentary on the automotive industry. May became an integral part of the show, and he stayed with it until 2015.

He has also written several books, including May on Motors, Oz and James’s Big Wine Adventure, and How to Land an A330 Airbus Long Lane with Turnings, amongst others

From 2003-2011, he wrote a weekly column for The Daily Telegraph’s motoring section.
