Early Life

Gordon James Ramsay was born on 8 November 1966, in Johnstone, Scotland. He was born to Helen and Gordon James Sr. He grew up in a working-class family; his mother was a nurse and his father worked as a welder, shopkeeper, and swimming pool manager. He was the second of four children. 

At the beginning of his career, he worked as a pot washer in an Indian restaurant. His dream was to become a footballer, he also played under-14 football but he had to give up his dream because of his serious knee injury. Ramsay studied hotel management and culinary arts and attended North Oxfordshire Technical College. 


He began his career working in various restaurants across the UK, including the London restaurant Harvey’s. He worked at Wroxton House Hotel as a commis chef. Later he worked for several restaurants including Harveys, Le Gavroche, Le Gavroche, Hotel Diva, and La Tante Claire. 

 In 1993, Ramsay became the head chef at the newly opened Aubergine restaurant in London, where he quickly gained recognition for his culinary skills.

In 1998, Ramsay opened his first restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, which was awarded three Michelin stars within three years of opening. Since then, Ramsay has opened numerous successful restaurants including Amaryllis, Pétrus, Glasgow, Verre, and Laurier Gordon Ramsay in London, Las Vegas, and other cities around the world.

Ramsay is also a successful author. In 1996, Gordon Ramsay married Cayetana Elizabeth Hutcheson. The couple has 5 children.
