Early Life

Tucker Carlson’s real name is Tucker Swanson McNear Carlson. He was born on 16 May 1969, in the Mission district of San Francisco, California, to Richard Warner Carlson and Lisa McNear Lombardi. His father is a former gonzo reporter and US ambassador and his mother was an artist. Nine years after the marriage, Carlson’s parents divorced in 1976, and Richard was granted custody of Tucker and his brother. In 1979, Carlson’s father married Patricia Caroline Swanson.

Carlson attended St. George’s School and completed his education at Trinity College in Hartford with a BA in history.

Career

After completing his degree, he tried to join the Central Intelligence Agency but his application was denied, so he decided to pursue his career in journalism.

He began his career as a fact-checker for Policy Review. He then worked as an opinion writer for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He also worked as a columnist for New York Magazine and Reader’s Digest, writing for The Daily Beast, The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, Esquire Slate, and The Weekly Standard. Tucker Carlson began his television career as a host of the CNN panel discussion program, Crossfire. In 2004, Jon Stewart appeared on Crossfire to promote America (The Book). Carlson was singled out by Jon Stewart on the show. After this controversy, in 2005, CNN decided not to renew its contract. In 2004, he was signed by PBS to host Tucker Carlson: Unfiltered. In 2005, he announced that he would leave the show, to focus on his new MSNBC show, Tucker. He then worked on MSNBC as a host from 2005 to 2008. 

In 2009, he was hired by Fox News as a Fox News Contributor. In 2016, he began hosting Tucker Carlson Tonight on Fox News. The show was getting consistently high ratings, averaging 2.8 million views per night. In 2017, the show was the most-viewed cable program in the 9 pm slot. 

In 2010, Carlson and Neil Patel launched a political news website, The Daily Caller. The website was funded by Foster Friess. Tucker was editor-in-chief and occasionally wrote opinion pieces.

Tucker Carlson wrote two books, Ship of Fools: How a Selfish Ruling Class is Bringing America to the Brink of Revolution, and The Long Slide: Thirty Years in American Journalism. Carlson authored the memoir Politicians, Partisans, and Parasites: My Adventures in Cable News.

He was a contestant on the reality show Dancing with the Stars season 3. He made cameos in several series including 30 Rocks and The King of Queens. He made a guest appearance in the film Swing Vote. 

He interviewed Governor George Bush for Talk Magazine in 1999.

Personal Life

Trucker married his long-time girlfriend Susan Andrews. Susan is the daughter of the school headmaster, who studies in Rhode Island. The couple has four children, one boy, and three girls. Carlson had dyslexia.
