Michael Chang was born on February 22, 1972, in Hoboken, New Jersey, but grew up in California. His parents were both avid tennis players, and they introduced him to the sport at a young age. Chang showed an early talent for tennis and began competing in tournaments when he was just six years old. He attended San Dieguito High School, but he dropped out in tenth grade. He completed his GED in 1988, in order to pursue his professional tennis career. Chang also attended the master’s in ministry program at Biola University in California.

Michael Chang turned pro in 1988 at the age of 16, and he quickly established himself as one of the top players in the world. He won his first Grand Slam title at the 1989 French Open, becoming the youngest male player ever to win a Grand Slam singles title. At the age of 12, he won his first national title USTA Junior Hard Court singles. At the age of 13, he won Fiesta Bowl 16s. He won the USTA Boys 18s Hardcourts and the Boys 18s Nationals at the age of 15, at the same period, he became the youngest player to win a main draw match at the US Open when he defeated Paul McNamee in four sets in the first round.

At the age of 16, He won his first top-level singles title in 1988 in San Francisco. At the age of 17, in 1989, he won the French Open and became the youngest player ever to win a Grand Slam title. In 1990, he was the key member of the US team which won the Davis Cup. He represented the United States in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. In 2014, he became the coach of Kei Nishikori. 

Over the course of his career, Chang won a total of 34 singles titles, including seven ATP Masters 1000 events. He was known for his speed and agility on the court, as well as his strong mental game.
