Peterson was born on 12 June 1962, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He was born to Walter and Beverly Peterson. His father was a school teacher and his mother was a librarian at the Fairview campus of Grande Prairie Regional College. He attended Fairview High school and completed his bachelor’s degrees in political science and psychology from the University of Alberta and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from McGill University.
From the age of 13 to 14, Peterson joined the New Democratic Party.

At the beginning of his career, he was hired as an assistant professor in the psychology department at Harvard University.
