At the age of 18, he won both the mixed doubles and Junior singles titles at the French Open. 

John McEnroe turned pro in 1978 and quickly established himself as one of the top players in the world. He won his first Grand Slam title at the 1979 US Open, and he went on to win a total of seven Grand Slam singles titles over the course of his career.

In 1978, he enrolled at Stanford University, and he was recruited by Dick Gould. Where he led the Stanford team to an NCAA championship and also won the NCAA singles title.
