John Legend’s real name is John Roger Stephens. He was born on 28 December 1978, to Ronald Lamar Stephens and Phyllis Elaine. He was born in Springfield, Ohio. He is the eldest of four children. His father was a drummer and a factory worker at Navistar and his mother was a seamstress. His mother sang and directed the church choir, while his grandmother was the church organist. His mother homeschooled him. He began playing piano at the age of 4.
At the age of 7, John performed with his church choir. John Legend attended North High School. He completed his graduation from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1999, He graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English with an emphasis on African-American literature.

After completing his graduation, he worked at Boston Consulting Group as a management consultant and recorded his music.
