His father was an executive vice president of a small publishing company, and his mother was an audiology supervisor. He attended Edgemont Junior-Senior High School. While in school he worked at local Baskin Robbins. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and government from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. During college, he played on the rugby team.
After completing his graduation he applied for Goldman Sachs for an analyst position but he was rejected, later, he joined Irving Trust. In 1986, he joined Drexel Burnham as a commercial paper salesman. After Drexel Burnham, he joined Bear Stearns as a high risk bond seller.
