Early Life

Bernard Arnault’s real name is Bernard Jean Étienne Arnault. He was born on 5 March 1949, to Jean Léon Arnault and Marie-Josèphe Savinel. He was born in Roubaix, France. His father Jean was a manufacturer and owned the civil engineering company Ferret-Savinel, and his mother was a homemaker. Arnault attended Lycée Maxence Van Der Meersch and the Lycée Faidherbe. In 1971, he graduated from École Polytechnique, a top engineering college in France. His mother Marie was the daughter of Étienne Savinel, who owned the civil engineering company, Ferret-Savinel. In 1950, Savinel passed on the management of Ferret-Savinel to his son-in-law Jean Arnault. 

Career

After completing his degree, he began working for his father’s company. From 1978 to 1984, he was the president of Ferret-Savinel. While serving as President, he convinced his father to focus on real estate, then the company sold the industrial construction division and renamed it Ferinel. He acquired and became the luxury goods company Financiere Agache’s CEO in 1984. Then he acquired a textile and retail conglomerate company, the Boussac Saint-Frères empire. The company owns Christian Dior, the department store Le Bon Marché, the retail shop Conforama, and the diapers manufacturer Peaudouce. Two years later, he fired 9,000 workers. Later, he sold all the company’s assets except Christian Dior and Le Bon Marché department stores. In 1987, the company’s revenue was $112 million. 

In 1987, Louis Vuitton merged with Moët Hennessy, and the company was named LVMH. Bernard purchased 24% of LVMH shares for $1.5 billion. In 1989, he bought a more than 13.5% share of the company and became the largest stockholder of the company. Under Bernard, the company’s valuation increased by 15 times. LVMH is the largest conglomerate company and owns more than 70 brands including Kenzo, Belmond Limited, Belvedere Vodka, Benefit Cosmetics, Berluti, BITE Beauty, Le Bon Marché, Bulgari, Bulgari Hotel and Residences, Acqua di Parma, Ardbeg distillery, 10 Cane, Domaine Chandon California, Dior, DFS Group, Caffè-Pasticceria Cova, Cape, Mentelle Vineyards, Celine (brand), Champagne Krug, Champagne Mercier, Dom Pérignon, Chaumet, Château Cheval, Blanc, Clos des Lambrays, Cloudy Bay, Vineyards, Colgin Cellars, Connaissance des Arts, Zenith (watchmaker), Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., TAG Heuer, and many others. 

Bernard Arnault also invested in several companies such as Netflix, Boo.com, Libertysurf, Zebank, and Europatweb.

Arnault with Colony Capital owns 10.69% of Carrefour, the world’s second-largest food distributor and France’s largest supermarket retailer.  Arnault bought Princess Yachts for £253 million. Arnault’s collection includes work by Henry Moore, Yves Klein, Picasso, and Andy Warhol. He has also sponsored artistic exhibitions in France.

Personal Life

In 1973, Bernard Arnault married Anne Dewavrin. The couple has two children Antoine and Delphine. They separated in 1990. In 1991, Bernard married Canadian concert pianist, Hélène Mercier. The couple has three children Jean, Frédéric and Alexandre. All five children have their roles in brands controlled by Arnault,

Antoine is the CEO of Berluti and chairman of Loro Piana.

Delphine is the director and executive vice president of Louis Vuitton (LVMH Group).

Jean is the Director of Marketing and Development at Louis Vuitton.

Alexandre is EVP of Tiffany & Co.
